Young unlicensed drivers: Three Studies to Understand the Association of Lifestyle and Area Associated Risk

This project focuses on young unlicensed drivers (YUDs); that is, drivers under age 19 who have never been licensed to drive, or whose licenses have been suspended, revoked, or expired without renewal. State crash records suggest that YUDs are a high-risk group, being involved in one of nine fatal young-driver-involved fatal crashes in the US, accounting for approximately 500 crashes and 600 fatalities. The project examines driving behaviors and practices, health practices, and individual characteristics of YUDs, how they differ from licensed young drivers, and their association with young driver fatalities. Crash characteristics of both YUDs and licensed young drivers are also compared.

Principal Investigator: C. Raymond Bingham (UMTRI)
